ADT came to the rescue of Stevie and his fellow shelter companions, sparing them from the grim fate of euthanasia at the Hall County Animal Shelter. Stevie, in particular, needed treatment for a pulmonary embolism and heartworm. However, his health took a devastating turn when he experienced three grand mal seizures on the night of Thursday, October 19th. We acted swiftly, seeking the counsel of Dr. Speed on the following Friday morning. Following a thorough evaluation by our Medical Director and the attending physician, it became painfully evident that Stevie's neurological condition had deteriorated much faster than anticipated.
The reality was that Stevie required round-the-clock care in a medical facility, a level of support our Director was not equipped to provide. Moreover, his neurological condition made him an unsuitable candidate for heartworm treatment, and the prognosis was exceedingly bleak. Making these challenging decisions, as humans who care deeply for these animals, is one of the most heart-wrenching aspects of our role. We strive to balance the pursuit of medical care with the quality of life for the suffering dogs we encounter.
Stevie had only known love since leaving the shelter. He spent a week basking in the sunshine with his canine companions, but ADT had to make the unbearable decision to let him find peace in doggy heaven to end his suffering. Witnessing the deterioration of his seizure condition, along with his blindness and heartworm, was truly devastating. Dr. Speed assured us that we were making the humane medical decision to grant Stevie the peace he may have never known. We were there with Stevie until his very last breath, and we arranged for a private cremation. Once ADT has its facility, we plan to dedicate a wing in Stevie's name and initiate a program to support dogs with special needs.
During this difficult time, we humbly request your love and kindness as we mourn the loss of this sweet soul. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who contributed to the love and care that Stevie experienced in the final chapter of his life.
